1969 Original Vintage Poster “The Rolling Stones in Concert”. Size: 21 5/8 x 14 inches (55 x 36 cm). Printed by Tea Lautrec Litho, S. Original 1st printing tour blank concert poster for the Rolling Stones 1969 Tour of the USA. Not a giclée reproduction. This was the Rolling Stones’ first US tour since July 1966. The tour set lists were derived mostly from 1968’s Beggars Banquet album and the forthcoming Let It Bleed. During the tour, many (including journalists) felt that the ticket prices were far too high. In answer to this criticism, the Rolling Stones decided to end their tour with a free concert in San Francisco which turned out to be the infamous Altamont on December 6th. David Byrd designed this beautiful piece, which was used as a tour blank for the Rolling Stones. These were created for shows in 1969 and are most seen without any venue information printed in the bottom area. The national touring company would design a color poster ahead of time, complete with a large blank space. Then a large quantity of these “tour blanks” would be printed. The local venue, date and ticket-prices for each stop on the tour would be entered into the blank space as needed. As the exclusive designer for the Fillmore East, Byrd produced 11 posters for Bill Graham between 1968-71. With his architectural training, powerful linework and sense of dimension and balance, Byrd said his understanding of symmetry. Led [me] right up to Art Nouveau. Add to that my LSD experiences, and it all connected up somehow. Byrd’s credits include concert poster designs for Jimi Hendrix, the Who, the Grateful Dead, movie posters for Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar. Medium glossy stock poster is in excellent condition. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction.

The original owner of The Fillmore property, Emma Gates Butler, hired James W. And Merritt Reid in 1910 to draw plans for an Italianate-style dance hall at the southwest corner of Fillmore and Geary. The Majestic Hall and Majestic Academy of Dancing opened in 1912 on the second and third stories of the building, where the usual fare was Wednesday night socials and masquerade balls. The Fillmore was a dance hall operating under various names and managements – The Get Acquainted Society, Ambassador Dance Hall – through the 1930s, and a roller rink through the 1940s. In 1952, local entrepreneur Charles Sullivan began to book some of the biggest names in black music into The Fillmore. The careers of the Grateful Dead, the Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Moby Grape, the Butterfield Blues Band, and countless others were launched from The Fillmore stage. The most significant musical talent of the day has appeared there: Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Cream, Howlin’ Wolf, Captain Beefheart, Muddy Waters, The Who – well, you get the picture. Or you’ve heard the stories. If you’re lucky, you were there. This limited edition item is investment quality, could grade highly with CGC.
