BOB DYLAN Martin Luther King Jr 1963 MARCH ON WASHINGTON Orig Concert Handbill
Here is an original item one of the most important moments in civil rights and US history! This is an authentic original (printed BEFORE the concert) handbill / flyer advertising. The Historic MARCH ON WASHINGTON FOR JOBS AND FREEDOM. This is the famous Civil Rights March where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Gave his famous “I Have A Dream ” speech. Other speakers and performers (some not listed on the handbill but well documented to have appeared and/or performed) include BOB DYLAN and JOAN BAEZ , Peter Paul & Mary, Len Chandler, Mahalia Jackson, others. This is a extremely rare item! It is one of several different handbills that were printed and distributed around the country and is perhaps the rarest version. I have only seen one other of this version in 40 years of collecting. It measures approximately 8 1/2 x 11 inches and is in VG+ condition. It was folded in eighths back at the time and is mostly flattened but would flatten more under some weight for a time. There are a few small brown age spots that are visible in my high-resolution scans. Y scans makes it appear toned but it is not. It is basically black ink on white paper. There are no tears or holes or significant damage. Amazing to have survived 57 years in any condition. Please see photos for accurate image report. The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom , the March on Washington , or The Great March on Washington , was one of the largest political rallies for human rights in United States history and demanded civil and economic rights for African Americans. It took place in Washington, D. Thousands of Americans headed to Washington on Tuesday August 27, 1963. On Wednesday, August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. Standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, delivered his historic “I Have a Dream” speech in which he called for an end to racism. The march was organized by A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin, who built an alliance of civil rights, labor, and religious organizations that came together under the banner of “jobs and freedom”. Estimates of the number of participants varied from 200,000 to 300,000; the most widely cited estimate is 250,000 people. Observers estimated that 75-80% of the marchers were black. The march is credited with helping to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and preceded the Selma Voting Rights Movement which led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The actual order of the speakers was as follows: 1. Philip Randolph – March Director, 2. Walter Reuther – AFL-CIO, 3. Roy Wilkins – NAACP, 4. John Lewis – SNNC, 5. Daisy Bates – Little Rock, Arkansas, 6. Eugene Carson Blake – United Presbyterian Church and the National Council of Churches, 7. Floyd McKissick – CORE, 8. Whitney Young – National Urban League, 9. Several smaller speeches, including Rabbi Joachim Prinz – American Jewish Congress, Mathew Ahmann – National Catholic Conference, Josephine Baker – actress, and 10. Then closing remarks by A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin, March Organizers, leading with The Pledge and list of demands. Gospel legend MAHALIA JACKSON sang “How I Got Over”, and MARIAN ANDERSON sang “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”. JOAN BAEZ led the crowds in several verses of “We Shall Overcome” and “Oh Freedom”. Dylan also performed “Only a Pawn in Their Game” and joined Joan Baez, Len Chandler and others to perform “Keep Your Eyes On The Prize”.
