PATTI SMITH 1ST EVER STAGE APPEARANCE 1970 HOLY GRAIL Concert Poster WARHOL
This is an authentic original (printed BEFORE the event) poster advertising Patti Smith’s stage debut in. La MaMa presents FEMME FATALE: The Three Faces of Gloria. A play by Jackie Curtis – A Religious Entertainment! Starring: Jackie Curtis, PATTI SMITH, Penny Arcade, Bunny Eisenhower, and Mary Woronov as “Johnny Apollo”, and (not featured on the poster) Wayne County. Directed by Anthony I. Background info: Patti Smith, after returning from a trip to Paris with her sister in early 1969, took up residence at the infamous Chelsea Hotel with Robert Mapplethorpe. By the close of 1969. She had been accepted as a fully fledged member of the Chelsea Hotel sect. When not writing poetry or working the till at Scribner’s bookstore, she could be found networking furiously in the hotel lobby. Within the year, Smith would become friends with such notable residents as Janis Joplin, Gregory Corso, Leonard Cohen, William Burroughs, and Harry Smith. Eager to establish contacts in the literary and artistic worlds, Smith and Mapplethorpe took to hanging out at the terminally hip Max’s Kansas City, which numbered among its diverse clientele such luminaries as Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Larry Rivers, and Robert Rauschenberg, as well as numerous celebrities from the realms of politics, high society, film and fashion. Among the most influential connections Patti made during this person was the theatrical impresario Tony Ingrassia. Impressed more by her striking appearance than by her as yet untried acting skills, Ingressia invite Patti to make her stage debut in the Playhouse of the Ridiculous play Femme Fatale , at the La Mama theatre in May 1970. Patti’s co-actors were the Andy Warhol stars Wayne (later to become Jayne) County, Penny Arcade, Mary Woronov, and Jackie Curtis. The play itself was written by Jackie Curtis and was loosely based on the drag queen’s experiences with her fellow associates. The success in the Theatre of the Ridiculous brought her to the attention of a number of key players in the Manhattan arts scene, including Andy Warhol and Sam Shepard. This is by far the “holy grail” of Patti Smith memorabilia. I’ve been collecting Patti SMith since the 1970s and this is the only one of these that I have ever seen. I found one on line in the La Mama archive in far lessor condition, but that’s it! To call this a very rare item is an extreme understatement! It measures 8 1/2 x 14 inches and is in VG+ condition. PLEASE SEE THE ENLARGED PHOTOS FOR AN ACCURATE CONDITION REPORT. It was at one time irregularly folded in eighths. There is some light abrasion to the right edge. It has a few small edge tears, nothing serious, and a couple of very small holes on the bottom – one below the M in LA MA MA in the lower left corner and a few in the lower right corner. A competent paper conservator could easily restore this, but I feel that it has it own special charm and authenticity as it is! You will not be disappointed with this item in your collection. Guaranteed authentic and original! Feel free to ask any questions you may have about this item. If you are outside of the U.
